Director of Boarding

Nelson College is a single-sex boys’ school approximately 1,000 students with a long history of providing boarding to students from around the South Island.

We’re looking for an energetic and caring person to lead our Boarding operations that are central to Nelson College.

The Director of Boarding is responsible for the overall physical and emotional care of our boarding students, ensuring that their boarding experience is positive and supports their learning and development.  You will oversee the staffing, operations and marketing of boarding at Nelson College, reporting directly to the Tumuaki (Principal) and being part of the Senior Leadership Team.  You are directly supported by two housemasters who each manage one of the recently renovated hostels (Rutherford and Barnicoat).

The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills with the ability to foster positive harmonious relationships with boys and their whānau. Previous experience in a school or boarding facility is desirable.

The position is well remunerated and comes with free accommodation, food, and utilities.  It is a part-time role that could fit around another job (teaching or other), with the expectation that the life of the hostel runs smoothly and the ability to respond to all situations in a timely manner.

The ideal candidate will:

  • have a strong interest in the pastoral care of teenage boys
  • be enthusiastic and patient
  • have good organisational and administrative skills
  • be a team player who demonstrates maturity and professionalism
  • flexibility to work both weekdays and weekends when required.

Housemaster (Rutherford House)

Reporting to the Director of Boarding, we’re looking for an energetic and caring person to manage Rutherford House, one of our two boarding recently renovated hostels.

The Housemaster oversees the day-to-day operations of the hostel, managing staff to ensure our students are cared for physically and  emotionally, and that our boys’ boarding experience is positive and supports their learning and development.

The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills with the ability to foster positive harmonious relationships with boys and their whānau. Previous experience in a school or boarding facility is desirable.
