Qualifications

At Nelson College, we offer a wide range of qualifications designed to support students on their educational and vocational journeys. Our qualifications provide pathways for academic excellence, university preparation, and specialised vocational training. Full details on each qualification can be found through dedicated links and documents provided.

National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)

NCEA is the core qualification framework in New Zealand. From January 2024, students will need to achieve 60 credits for each level (Levels 1, 2, and 3), along with meeting new literacy and numeracy requirements. NCEA equips students with essential skills and knowledge as they prepare for future study or careers.

Endorsements: Academic Excellence

Students can achieve Merit or Excellence endorsements at all NCEA levels, highlighting exceptional academic performance. Subject-specific endorsements are also available, allowing students to showcase excellence in individual subjects.

University Entrance (UE)

University Entrance is the minimum requirement for admission to universities in New Zealand. It requires a combination of Level 3 NCEA credits, along with specific literacy and numeracy standards.

NZQA Scholarship

Scholarship exams challenge high-achieving students in their Level 3 subjects. These prestigious assessments offer the opportunity to gain financial awards and recognition at a national level.

Vocational Pathways and Trades Qualifications

For students interested in hands-on careers, Nelson College offers pathways through Industry Training Organisations (ITOs), apprenticeships, and vocational qualifications. These programmes provide students with industry-relevant skills in areas such as construction, engineering, motor vehicle maintenance, and hospitality.

National Certificates

In addition to NCEA, students can work towards National Certificates, which provide entry-level qualifications in specific fields. These certificates can be a stepping stone to further tertiary study or direct entry into the workforce.
