Cricket at Nelson College dates back nearly as far as the school itself, making it one of the oldest cricket-playing schools in the country. Nelson College has and continues to produce many Black Caps, Central Districts players, Nelson Griffins and age group representatives due to its consistent programme and pathways. Alongside regular Saturday Cricket, the boys have many wonderful School opportunities due to its traditions and connections with other schools around the country. The 1st XI competes at the annual quadrangular tournament, the annual tour of Canterbury and the Willows match, Darcy Cup and Gillette Cup and management are proactive in their networking efforts to provide more opportunities. Plans for an international Cricket and cultural trip to Australia or Sri Lanka are in the pipeline and more details will be released as we progress. We pride ourselves on providing coaching opportunities for our players. Notable figures include Chris Cairns, Michael Parlane, Garry MacDonald and many others that have given time to our boys this last season.
The other teams participate in the Marlborough exchange, the Tasman Secondary Schools (TSS) 2nd XI Tournament, the TSS Junior Tournament, and the Year 9 Quadrangular Tournament, along with additional fixtures against other local schools.
We currently have five registered teams in the local Nelson Cricket competitions with the 1st XI in the premier men’s competition, the 2nd XI in the men’s 2nd grade competition, the senior XI in the men’s 3rd grade competition and two Junior sides in the 4th and 5th grade competition.
Important Dates:
Registration
- This happens in Term 3 and again in Term 1.
- If you are new to Nelson College in Term 1, and need a team to play for, sign up in the Sports Office as soon as school starts
- Term 1, Year 9 registrations occur in your PE class, usually in the first week
Cost:
- 1st XI: $310
- 2nd XI and senior XI: $160
- Junior teams: $130
- Year 9 Term 1 only $50
- Additional costs for TSS events, interschool fixtures and trips away
Training:
Term 1at the top field nets or indoor nets:
- Monday: Year 9 XI
- Tuesday: Year 10 XI
- Wednesday: 1st XI
Thursday: 2nd XI (top field nets), senior XI (Broads nets)
