Visual Arts at Nelson College offers an inspiring journey into creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking. Through innovative teaching in well-equipped spaces, students explore the dynamic world of Art Painting, Photography, and Design, gaining skills essential for today’s creative industries.

From Years 9 to 13, students are introduced to a variety of media and techniques, including digital tools like Adobe Creative Suite and photography equipment. Junior courses foster curiosity and foundational skills, while senior courses lead to NCEA qualifications, including University Entrance.

Visual Arts empowers students to communicate their ideas, explore diverse perspectives, and celebrate creativity. Whether through traditional drawing and painting or contemporary digital design, students develop problem-solving and conceptual thinking skills that are invaluable in any career.

Performing Arts

Drama is a university approved – literacy rich subject which can be taken from Year 9 to Year 13. The year 9-10 classes learn elements of set design, lighting, and sound production which they apply to their devised scene. Senior classes have the opportunity to perform a class production as well as combined theatre opportunites with Nelson College for Girls. Students may select script writing and directing as an option. Try your hand at Shakespeare in 2025 and Theatre Sports-We can tailor a course for you.
