Kia ora tātou,

Last Thursday, two of our staff (Luke Toynbee and Dan Hanson) led professional learning (PLD) for our staff around the changes happening in literacy and numeracy – changes I’m sure you’ve heard about in the media.

As part of the PLD session, Dan and Luke got staff to try some exemplar questions.  I’ve included copies of these later in the newsletter to give you an idea of the questions.
The standard certainly is higher, and I believe this is good.  Despite claims that computers and the internet would remove the need for basic skills, our young people need sound literacy and numeracy more than ever.  To read tenancy or employment contracts.  To calculate discounts when they compare prices online.  To calculate exchange rates.  And so on.
