Nelson College Newsletter August 1st 2025
Kia ora Parents, Caregivers and Whānau,
As we move into the heart of Term 3, I want to acknowledge the energy and commitment that has been evident across our College community. It has been a particularly full and rewarding few weeks, and I am grateful for the continued support and engagement from families.
Our recent Open Day was an outstanding success, with a large number of prospective families coming through the school. It was a pleasure to welcome them and share what makes Nelson College special. Alongside this, our senior course selection evening and parent-teacher interviews have helped guide important conversations about academic pathways and learning progressions. I thank you for your participation and ongoing partnership in your son’s education.
Next week, we welcome the Education Review Office (ERO) to our kura. This is an important opportunity for us to reflect on our progress, celebrate areas of strength, and seek guidance in the areas we are continuing to develop. We look forward to working with the team and sharing the many ways in which we are striving for excellence.
We extend our best wishes to our First XV who play in the Miles Toyota Cup semi-final this weekend. The boys have shown resilience and determination throughout the season, and we are proud of the way they continue to represent the College.
I would also like to highlight the many positive reports we have received about our young men in the wider community from helping elderly neighbours to being respectful and thoughtful when travelling on flights or visiting public places. As we regularly encourage our boys to do the right thing when nobody is watching, we appreciate the support of families in reinforcing the importance of respect and responsibility, especially when wearing the Nelson College uniform.
Congratulations to our Combined Jazz Band as they head off to defend their title at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival next weekend. We wish them all the very best for another strong showing. In music, my congratulations go to Jonah Hlichal on coming in in the top 15 solo/duo category at Rockquest. I would encourage you to attend our upcoming Rock The Boathouse (see notices) annual showcase of rock and pop music if you want to see what sets our aura apart in this arena. Our swimmers also achieved exceptional results at the recent New Zealand Secondary School Championships. Keep an eye on our socials for more information on that.
These achievements reflect not only talent but also the hard work and discipline our students bring to their pursuits.
As the term progresses, I remind all senior students and their families that this is a critical period for academic focus. NCEA internal assessments are ongoing, and many are working hard to consolidate their progress ahead of examinations. Please do check in regularly with your son, your support makes a real difference in helping him navigate the demands of this busy term.
Thank you, as always, for your encouragement, presence and partnership. Together, we continue to shape our young men into people of character, purpose and pride.
Ngā mihi nui,
Richard Washington
