“Beginning of Degradation” Flynn mercer with his accepted submission into the Wallace Arts Trust Secondary School Art Awards for 2020.

“This year in Art I have based my folio theme on human anatomy and portraiture. I have been inspired by books like Gray’s Anatomy and artists such as Leonardo De Vinci and Sir William Orpen”.

Congratulations to Year 12 Art student Flynn Mercer. No small feat getting accepted into this national competition. Flynn’s focus for the year in Art Painting has seen him develop his technique of combining painting in acrylic with water colour pencil. The artworks that extend from this piece and make up his folio submission explore the revealing of viscera and bone as more hands begin tearing the subject apart. A gruesome sounding concept, but when expressed through the genre of medical illustration, clinical and clean, it may belie a deeper contemplation; perhaps the “degradation” of the physical in search of an identity that sits elusively beyond.
