At Nelson College, we pride ourselves on offering a vibrant and dynamic performing arts program. Our students have numerous opportunities to showcase their talents through a variety of performances and productions throughout the year. These events not only highlight the artistic skills of our students but also provide invaluable experiences in various aspects of production.
Annual Major Productions
Each year, we collaborate with Nelson College for Girls to stage a major joint drama production. This event is a highlight of our calendar, bringing together the best of both schools’ talents. Recent examples of these productions include the critically acclaimed “One Man, Two Guvnors” by Richard Bean. These productions offer students the chance to perform substantial roles and gain credits in not only in acting, but sound, and set design.
Concerts and Gigs
Our musical events are equally diverse and exciting. We host an annual rock gig, “Rock the Boathouse,” which showcases the talents of our student rock bands. Additionally, we have an evening of classical music, “Between Two Colleges,” where students perform in a more traditional setting. These events provide a platform for students to explore different musical genres and styles.
Combined Bands and Orchestras
Throughout the year, students can join the Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College Combined Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Orchestra. These ensembles perform at various events and outreach opportunities, such as school visits, allowing students to develop their musical skills and perform in front of diverse audiences.
Behind the Scenes Opportunities
Our performances and productions are not just about being in the spotlight. We offer numerous opportunities for students to get involved behind the scenes. Whether it’s sound and lighting, videography, editing, or wardrobe, there are roles for everyone. For instance, during the production of “One Man, Two Guvnors,” students worked with industry professionals from Gravity Events Nelson, gaining hands-on experience in lighting and sound mixing.
Drama Studies
Our drama curriculum is designed to develop students’ skills in various aspects of performance. Students start by studying techniques and elements of drama, with scenes from plays like “The Battalion” by Helen Pearse-Otene. They learn to develop their characters through voice, facial expression, body movement, and use of space on stage. This foundation prepares them for more advanced work, such as performing in “Niu Sila” by Dave Armstrong and Oscar Kightley, which explores themes of friendship and cultural differences.
At Nelson College, we believe that the performing arts are an essential part of education, providing students with opportunities to express themselves creatively, work collaboratively, and develop a wide range of skills. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, our students gain experiences that will benefit them throughout their lives.
