Mathematics

We offer a high quality mathematics education.

Mathematics is a compulsory subject at Nelson College for Year 9 to Year 11 students and an optional subject in Years 12 and 13. Mathematics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in quantities, space and time. Statistics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in data.

By studying mathematics and statistics, students develop the ability to think creatively, critically, strategically and logically. They learn to structure and to organise, to carry out procedures flexibly and accurately, to process and communicate information and to enjoy intellectual challenge.

Mathematics courses are offered to students in Years 9 – 13, based on the NZ Mathematics Curriculum levels. Qualifications entered for are NCEA level 1-3 and NZ Scholarship.

Students are encouraged to enter the Mathematics competitions run annually at regional, national and international level. These competitions stimulate problem solving skills in a competitive environment.
