Languages & ESOL

Learning languages opens up students to understand and expand their knowledge of different worldviews. It enables them to connect with others and learn about diverse cultures. Additionally, language learning enhances many cognitive skills, including memory, problem-solving, and the ability to take risks. Furthermore, it can improve career opportunities by distinguishing individuals from their peers.

At Nelson College, we offer Te Reo Māori and Japanese from Year 9 to Year 13. Starting in 2025, all Year 9 students will experience half a year of Te Reo Māori and half a year of Japanese. This approach allows students to get a taste of language learning while experiencing two very different cultures and worldviews.

For students entering Nelson College with one or more languages as their mother tongue and who are learning English, we offer ESOL classes to support their English language needs. We provide ESOL immersion classes for those who require more than four hours of English instruction per week.

Junior courses look at one core language skill focus per term, through the lens of media, literature, short stories, nonfiction, radio, music, poetry and film which are accessible to students at each level.

Classes in the senior school are now divided into two pathways: the Academic Pathway and the Practical Pathway. Students in senior classes work through a syllabus based upon core skills, completing a combination of unit and achievement standards.
